A helicopter lesson in Devon - from swooping over wild moors, to hovering over the dramatic coastline, you'll see it all! These 30, 40 and 60-minute lessons offer some of the best scenery in the whole of the South West, as well as showing you the basics of helicopter flying.
You will be taking off from Dunkeswell Aerodrome in the heart of Devon, just a few miles north of Honiton. Surrounded by the Blackdown Hills, the airfield sits 839ft above sea level, making this the highest licensed airfield in not only the South West, but in the whole of the UK!
This operator's Devonshire base means they are well placed for a variety of helicopter work, including lifting and craning to hard-to-reach areas of the county, specialist aerial photography and filming, as well as airborne survey work and training too.
This experience is treated as a trial lesson. So whilst the views out of the all-glass domed chopper might take your breath away, you will also have the chance to take the controls, no matter which flight duration your book... but only if you want to.
As for the helicopter that you'll be using for your lesson here in Devon, it'll most likely be a two seater Sikorsky S-300, formerly known as the Schweizer 300. This is a light and agile little mover with a single, three-bladed main rotor. Renowned for being easy to handle and reliable too, it looks like you have the perfect chopper for the job.
And Dunkeswell is a lovely airfield. It's an ex RAF and US Naval base, affectionately known as 'Mudville Heights'. Since closing after the war, general aviation has really taken off here. We think it must be something to do with the warm and friendly Devonshire welcome (and do check out the on-airfield cafe!), the fascinating mix of rugged moorland and quaint villages that surround the airfield and the overall excellence of teaching here. Time to sign up for your helicopter lessons in Devon!
