Go gliding in Devon and see the beautiful countryside from an amazingly serene vantage point, as you glide through the skies above this quiet South Western corner of the country! This small and friendly North Devonshire aero club aims to make you feel part of the team for the entirety of your glider experience.
You will be taking an aerotow glider flight in a wonderful Slingsby Silver T21 Sedbergh - a vintage RAF trainer glider affectionately known as 'The Barge'. Being an aerotow, means a plane will be pulling you up into the air. And this Devonshire club has an impressive choice of tugs, from the Piper Super Cruiser and Bellanca Citabria, to a lovely Chipmunk.
Sitting in this wide-body (hence the nickname) side-by-side glider, you'll get to see everything the pilot does during their pre-flight checks. After a briefing on safety and a run through of the glider's flight controls and instrument panels, you're ready to go.
Once airborne and having been released by the tug, you'll soon start to get an aptitude for silent flight. No droning engines, no smell of aviation fuel, just the whistling sound of the wind, as you are gliding effortlessly through the Devon sky.
If you are keen to have a go yourself, the instructor will hand you the controls so you can fly the glider. And if you're feeling really confident in your newfound winged abilities, you can stay in charge for the remainder of the flight!
All aircraft used for these gliding over Devon days are owned and maintained by the club, which is one of the oldest established in the county, with a small fleet of modern and vintage open cockpit gliders. All instructors are fully qualified and members of the British Gliding Association. And last but certainly not least, this is one of the most beautiful locations to take a glider flight!
