Heritage Diesel Train Driving Experience in Derbyshire

On this exciting day out, you'll immerse yourself in the captivating world of diesel trains at the beautiful Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. This heritage railway is not just a scenic route; it's your chance to take control of two distinct diesel trains from an impressive lineup of rolling stock.

As you arrive, you'll be warmly welcomed and briefed on the day's itinerary. You'll first explore the lively loco shed, where you'll learn about the fascinating history of the trains you'll be driving. Then, it's time for the main event! You'll jump into the cab and drive a diesel railcar, feeling the power of the engine as you navigate the picturesque tracks. And that's not all! You'll also get the opportunity to handle a diesel locomotive, adding an extra layer of excitement to your railway adventure.

Don't worry if you're not experienced; friendly instructors will be with you every step of the way to ensure you have an enjoyable and safe driving experience. The day will conclude with a satisfying lunch, leaving you with memories (and maybe some new skills) that will last a lifetime!

What's Included

• Spend the day on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway
• Take the controls of a 1950s heritage diesel railcar and a main line heritage diesel locomotive
• You will form part of a small group taking turns driving the 18 mile return journey in each loco
• Travel between Wirksworth in the Derbyshire Peak District and Duffield just north of Derby
• Guidance from skilled instructors
• A freshly prepared lunch in the station cafe for the participant and one guest
• Guided tour of the Wirksworth site and the facilities
• Allow approximately 6 hours on site for this experience

When Is It Available

• Selected weekdays and weekends throughout the year
• Experiences generally start at 09:30 finishing around 16:00
• Due to popularity it is recommended you book well in advance to avoid disappointment

Suitable For

• Minimum age 18
• Participants must be agile enough to climb up into the locomotive

Spectators

• Guests can travel on the heritage railcar in the morning, however they will not be able to ride on the mainline diesel locomotive in the afternoon
• One spectator may join you for lunch (included)
• Additional guests can purchase lunch on the day if required

• Some days operate with two sessions taking place.  The running order described above may be reversed
